The solution

Newcastle University's historic Armstrong Building, a Grade 2 listed structure known for its rich history, including hosting Martin Luther King's honorary graduation, recently underwent a technological upgrade to enhance the Keeton Lomas Lecture Theatre. The challenge was to modernize this video conferencing venue, with its glass walls and high ceilings, while preserving its historical integrity. To address acoustic issues and ensure a seamless integration of technology, six Sennheiser TeamConnect Ceiling 2 (TCC 2) microphones were installed, adding to the university's existing Sennheiser equipment. The collaboration between Sennheiser and TK Team, which custom-designed acoustic panels to integrate the microphones and lighting, was crucial to the project's success. This innovative solution not only improved the room's acoustics but also maintained a cohesive, visually appealing design. Despite the installation challenges posed by the building's unique characteristics, the project was completed successfully, resulting in a state-of-the-art video conferencing venue that honors the Armstrong Building's historic significance while embracing modern technology.

"Newcastle asked if we could help with a Harvard-style room that was having twin-screen VC installed. They were already installing TeamConnect microphones but didn’t want the lighting, acoustic panels, and mics all hanging from different wires in this prestigious room. They wanted it to look purposed for VC as well as acoustically corrected. The project works and looks great."
